February 23, 2011 Letter

Family of mine,
Hey!!!! Another week gone. Nearly .25 done. Time is flying and I don't like it. My best two years are going by quick. So this week I will accomplish a few things. Finish the Book of Mormon, an exciting baptism this Sunday, and more learning.
In my mission there is a lot for me to read. It is the best time for one to learn. I want to finish the Book of Mormon at least 3 times, the four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, And John), Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl Of Great Price, and Jesus the Christ. I have embarked my journey on most of these. The best read so far is Jesus the Christ. I'm on about page 200, and it is PACKED with info.
The weather here is getting hotter. From months 3-6 are the HOT months, 6-12 rainy months, and 1-3 are the not so hot months. Boy do I miss real winter!
This coming Sunday is a baptism. Our investigator who has already finished the Book of Mormon. Exciting time in his life. This week I am trying to send a lot of pictures. I hope it works.
As for the food, rice every morning for breakfast, and the other meals too. I am starting to like the food more, just because there is not much other options. Well I think that does it for this week. Enjoy the pictures.

Love,
Elder Nordgren

February 16, 2011 Letter

Family and friends,
How is it going!!!!! I want to do a shout out for singles awareness day. Mine was good and normal. Funny, they celebrate pretty much all holidays here that we do just to get people to spend money. So Hayden has not got his call yet, but will soon. The time is coming soon that we will have another addition to the family. That will be an interesting time, and a time for the family to grow closer together. I don't here much from Andrew though, and Clint. What's going on there? I don't have too much to write this week. We will have a baptism on the 27th of this month. Everything is going well, and the weight is still coming off, but I'm going to buy new pants today. I have lost about 60 pounds and it seems to be leveling off. For now at least. Sorry that there are no pictures this week. I will try for next week though. I love you ll and I am praying for each and everyone of you individually. I love you and shall talk to ll of you later.

Letter Feb. 8, 2011

Dearest Family,
Here it is just another week flying by. This week is transfers also. I am staying where I am at with my same companion though. Another month and a half of an awesome companion. So it is with my deepest regrets to tell you that they are no pictures this week. I am sorry.
Most of you have probably heard about the fighting between Cambodia and Thailand. I am hearing that there are deaths on both sides. It is not too big to affect the work. It would be important if President Smedley said something about it, but that has not happened. We only hear bits and pieces from people on the street or members. I am safe and I know that Heavenly Father will keep all of His missionaries safe.
So this last Sunday in sacrament meeting the branch president forget about the two confirmations that were supposed to happen. So they will happen next week, and I will still be doing one of them. We have been putting a focus on getting new investigators this past week. It comes slow, but in the end there is always someone that wants to learn. Right now we have an investigator that we met in mid-January. His name is Peak (Pae-ek) He has set a goal to finish the Book of Mormon before he gets baptized this month on the 27th. He will make it easily. He is what you would call a golden investigator. It is looking to be like he will be the first baptism for me. You are lucky to get a baptism in your first area most missionaries say. I just hope he continues to grow as he has been doing.
As for me I am doing just fine. I'm in good spirits. With more bike problems every week, you find a way to laugh at these things. My companion Elder Thompson is way fun. Me and him are so alike. We have not even argued. That must be a surprise for all of you to hear. I'm not the easiest to get along with either. Well I think that about does it for this week. I just want to thank you all for everything that you all do for me. Keep me posted on all the sweet stuff that goes on in each of your lives. I love you all so much.

February 2nd Letter

Dear Family,
This last week was rougher than usual. Our three baptismal candidates didn't happen. Two moved away without telling us and the other failed his interview due to no obeying the sabath. And now he can't meet anymore because he works too much. People have their agency and that is his choice if he doesn't want to accept salvation when it was right in front of him. So this week there will only be a few pictures, but boy are they worth it.
The story that goes along with it is this: While traveling to a teaching appointment I saw what looked to be a stuffed animal of unusual size on the ground. A secong look made me think that that has got to be real skin! Third thought: what is an alligator doing this far away from the water? Wow was I wrong n that one. The fourth look told me everything I needed to know as I nearly ran its tail over. It is a Komodo Dragon!!!! About 8 feet long and hundreds of pounds. It is a pet of someone's and it is huge. Soon I will get a picture with me in it. (Next to it I mean, not eaten by it)
So this will be the week that Hayden Higgins gets his mission call. I want to hear all about that! He emailed me and told me that it is on its way. So Mom is Brinley's primary teacher. That is cool to hear, and even better that it sounds like she is done with everything. She has had it hard. One other thought about someone in the ward. Yesterday as I received mail I got one from Dad and two from Debbie Dewitt. She sent a thank you card that said, "Thank you for choosing to serve a mission" that was much needed last night. Please someone make a special visit to her house and tell her thank you for me.
So there are some customs here that sure are Asian. If you tough someone on their head it is a HUGE insult. Also if the bottom of your feet are pointed at anyone, another HUGE insult. Take your shoes off when you go inside. You don't toss things to people. You give it with two hands. You can shake your own genders hands (both hands at the same time) boys and girls do not touch each other. They bow. That is all I can think of for now.
I haven't got any new pants yet. Still on a huge downfall with weight. It is official. I lost 55 pounds in January. That's pretty amazing. Church is pretty normal. Enough priesthood to do all that is needed. Only about 90 members go to church a week though. That is why we are here though. Baptisms a month, are high. The goal for the year is 900. So it takes a lot of work. Well I am thinking that is all for this week. More to come next week. Thank you all for your support. I sure got the best family ever.
With Love,
Elder Nordgren
